Chart on Latin texts available in BibleWorks and other software

Another plug for a helpful post by Mark Hoffman. Earlier I posted a link for downloading a couple of versions of the Latin Vulgate and I mentioned that I am no expert in the Vulgate. Well I stand by my word on that, but in case you are interested in different versions of the Vulgate, Mark compiled a table which shows some of the Latin text versions and what Bible software programs have them.

Helpful list of modules

I've referenced his blog numerous times before, but Mark Hoffman provides another great post on his blog in which he creates an organized list of BibleWorks versions available and breaks them down into different groups in order for you to see what is all available. As the number of user databases have grown, the list has become quite long and so it's nice when others reorganize the data into ways which make it easier to see what's all out there.

Did you know that if you Google "BibleWorks 7" this blog doesn't even show up on the first page of searches? Well it didn't yesterday anyway, but in a shameless effort in order to increase the logic of the search engine, I will try to mention BibleWorks 7 specifically more often.

(This actually is not even an ego- or monetary-driven plot. I think if someone is looking at BibleWorks 7 this website would be one of the best things they would want to know about because they would learn that when they purchase BibleWorks 7, they're not only getting all of the great things that come as part of the program, they're also getting a humongous list of other freebies, some of which are not available on any other platform.)

However, in a Google search for "BibleWorks", our blog does show up and on the first page of the search is also this neat little link to an instructional guide to BibleWorks 7 from the Yale Divinity Library.

Now chances are you aren't going to learn anything new from it if you've been using BibleWorks 7 for a long time, but sometimes we learn best by constant review and seeing things explained from a different point of view. Also, if you're like me, you probably only read Help files as a last resort, so you might have missed something really basic quite early on. In any case, here's the link for you again:

New Module ~ Canons of the Council of Orange

Interesting fact of the day. There was not one Church council held at Orange, there were two. Up until the other day, I didn't know there were any. But here's a little bit about the Council held there in 529:

The Council of Orange was an outgrowth of the controversy between Augustine and Pelagius. This controversy had to do with degree to which a human being is responsible for his or her own salvation, and the role of the grace of God in bringing about salvation. The Pelagians held that human beings are born in a state of innocence, i.e., that there is no such thing as a sinful nature or original sin.

As a result of this view, they held that a state of sinless perfection was achievable in this life. The Council of Orange dealt with the Semi-Pelagian doctrine that the human race, though fallen and possessed of a sinful nature, is still "good" enough to able to lay hold of the grace of God through an act of unredeemed human will. The Council held to Augustine's view and repudiated Pelagius. The following canons greatly influenced the Reformed doctrine of Total Depravity.

New Versions - Vulgata Clementina and Glossa Ordinaria Migne (UPDATE 8/30)

These versions were actually available a couple of years ago, but I missed the boat on properly recognizing them. Here's some info on them:

This zip file contains two different versions that will need to be compiled. First is the Vulgata Clementina of 1598 (VUC) and the other is the Biblia Vulgata Clementina 1598 with end notes "Ordinary Glossa" (GLO).

The text originates from The Clementine Vulgate project. This is what they have to say about it:

After the Council of Trent, which declared in 1546 that the Vulgate alone was to be held as "authentic in public readings, discourses, and disputes, and that nobody might dare or presume to reject it on any pretence" (Sess. IV, De editione et usu sacrorum librorum), the Holy See undertook the task of producing a corrected, standard text of the Vulgate for the use of the universal Church. In 1590, an edition was duly produced in Rome by a commission of scholars, revised further by Sixtus V, and finally approved by him. After his death a further revision was carried out under the Jesuit Franciscus Toletus, and finally the work was printed in 1598 during the pontificate of Clement VIII, whose name has been attached to it since 1641. The Clementine text was the offical version of the Vulgate until 1979.

As a non-expert in this field, I'll leave it open for anyone to add more comment on the significance of either of these texts.

Addendum: As a commenter on Mark Hoffman's blog noted, the Clementine Vulgate project group seems a little bit questionable from a religious-political perspective. While the texts here are still apparently public domain, the nature of the source may or may not disinterest you in using them. I bind no one's conscience on the matter, but I know some are more sensitive on these issues.

New Version - Barclay's Translation of the Talmud

Thanks to Jay on the BibleWorks forums for a wonderful version: Barclay's translation of the Talmud. He also included footnotes to the text! Here's an example: You will note that this makes the second version of one of the texts of the Talmud, the Pirke Aboth (spelling variances abound) -- here's the first version. But this version, the BVT, also includes notes.

New Modules - Old Hebrew Grammar Series

I would be remiss if I neglected to mention that since the last major updating there has been not one, two, or even three new Hebrew grammar modules made available by Pasquale. Quite frankly I didn't even know that so many existed. All of these are out of print and copyright editions (so they are rather old), but nevertheless, they still might be useful to specialists in the field or else to those who simply like to see how others explain certain grammatical features. They are all modules of images of each page of the real book (so searching and copying and pasting is not really an option with them), which may downgrade their value. But then again, you're not going to be paying anything for them, so why are you complaining?

However, to increase their value, Pasquale has added a special feature to these files. Can you tell me what it is and how it is helpful? If anyone can figure it out, they will get the spotlight in the next blog post.

Another module by Pasquale, this work includes Die Schriften des Neuen Testaments by Hermann Freiherr von Soden, images of the pages of the real book arranged in order of the New Testament.

New Vocabulary File - Hebrew Verb Diagnostics

This vocab module was put together by Matt Hauger. The zip file includes a text readme, which offers the following explanation:

These forms are based on Pratico and Van Pelt’s charts in the back of ‘Basics of Biblical Hebrew.’ This book lacks charts on Qal weak verbs, however; these are drawn from the relevant chapters on each Qal form. In general, only those weak forms that differ from the corresponding strong form are included here. Not all the differing Hithpael weak forms from the chart are included; many of those forms do not even appear in the Hebrew Bible, and Hithpael forms are easily identified by their preformatives.

The idea behind it is that by looking at the markers of various verbal forms, the reader can become better at recognizing what makes a Qal imperfect or a Niphal cohortative. A picture shows how he accomplishes this:

The scholarly Hebraist might recognize the above as a typical formation of a Qal imperfect III-aleph verb, with the qames (long a-class vowel) under the 2nd consonant of the verb stem rather than a holem (o-class vowel), as is "typical" for a Qal imperfect. When coupled with a grammar, this vocabulary file is a great way to review the rules of the parsing game!

Save the zip file to your hard disk, then unzip the .vrt file to your c:\Program Files\BibleWorks 7\init folder (assuming a default installation).

Once you've unzipped the .vrt file to you init folder, then open BibleWorks. Once you have BibleWorks open, open the Vocabulary module --

Tools | Vocabulary Flashcard Module

Once you have the vocab module open, choose File | Import and navigate to the .vrt file you just unzipped into this folder.

A real post?

By my notice we haven't had a real substantive post all year on the BW blog. Talk about not good. At the beginning of the year we had file server issues where we lost all of our files. A little after that we had more blogger issues where our posts wouldn't post properly (meaning, at all), thus the reason for multiple test posts.

As we've said, life has gotten busier. It doesn't mean we have lost track of BibleWorks completely, but we have not been as good as maintaining this as we should be. As I've mentioned, a new marriage, a relocation, the beginning of a PhD program all have taken chunks of my time this year. Fortunately others have been producing new materials, we simply haven't been advertising them very well. If you have been following the BibleWorks forums (which I highly recommend), you should not have missed any of the new offerings that have been posted this year. Most of them I have managed to catch and upload here so that even if they are not blogged about, they are still in one place. However I have missed a few of them here and there during the school year, so if you know of any of those, please alert my attention to them and I will get them up.

Another reason why things have been quiet is because I've been enjoying reading a fellow BibleWorks user (and Lutheran! -- well that's a big deal in my book, you can ignore it, if you wish), Mark Hoffman's blog Biblical Studies and Technological Tools. If you haven't been following his blog, get with it! He has done an admirable job of comparing Bible software programs (among other things!) with regard to their offerings, how you can use them, advantages, disadvantages, etc. Although he was on sabbatical this year (and therefore amazingly prolific), his posts might be a little less plentiful this coming school year, but even so, he will still be worth following.

Anyway, now we try to play catch-up.

Algers F. Johns Aramaic Vocab File

Jackson Atkins of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary has submitted an Aramaic vocabulary file that is keyed to A Short Grammar of Biblical Aramaic by Alger F. Johns. Jackson describes the file:

Johns lists some verbs in several chapters but due to technical limitations I have only included them in the first chapter where they appear. I have retained BibleWorks verbal vowel pointing where a qamets appears under the first consonant instead of shewah. I have placed Johns' noun categories in the usage column following the information provided by BibleWorks and enclosed in parentheses. When you load the file, go to the tools drop down menu and select "filter" then check the "Include Aramaic" box. I made this file for a class so speed was imperative. Thus, if you find any mistakes please let me know on the BibleWorks official message board.

New Version - Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War (English)

Fortunately we have now passed through the dark side and our blog has been restored. Thanks again to users for helping us out with lost files. The digital age has only further underscored our need for redundancy. Lost zeros and ones are just as hard to replicate as are lost pieces of paper.

Now a new version for the history majors and fans of Greek classical prose: Thucydides! Thucydides forms half of the two-part Greek historian combo that is famous even in our day (Herodotus is the other half, duh!). Of course these were not the only historians around, but their works have established them as pillars of the study of history. Thucydides writes about the history of the Peloponnesian War which took place in the 5th century BC in Greece. If you want to read more about Thucydides or this work I would suggest Wikipedia as a good starting point (I liked the basic outline contained therein). Maybe it's biased and inaccurate, guess you'll have to compare what you learn there with other sources! See. Wikipedia encourages further study! :)

Now there's good news and bad news. First the good news: This release contains two different English translations of Thucydides. Now you can have more than one viewpoint in order to work through the text.

The bad news. I have been unable to find a public domain source of the Greek text of Thucydides. Perseus contains a nice Greek text, but it is from a 1942 Oxford Press edition, which to the best of my knowledge would still be in copyright. Now you can still make for your own personal use a Greek edition from the Perseus text, but that is a rather complicated process. However, if someone can come up with a public domain Greek text, I will see about converting it and making it available on the blog here. Until then, I hope something is better than nothing!

Help Rebuild the BibleWorks Blog!

Well, I'm not sure what has happened to the files, and Yahoo has not been responsive, so we will name this little episode "Yahoops!" from now on.

I was able to recover a few files, but many have perished. So, if you have any of the add-ons listed below (with all accompanying files; e.g. *.bww, *.ddf, etc.; preferably in a zipped folder) then please comment on this blog post or reply to the BibleWorks Forum thread and list what you have. Reply especially if you have a way of "moving" very large files. I've also set up an email for the blog: theunofficialbibleworksblog@gmail.com. So if you can email me files, that would be the way to do it.

Yikes! The BW blog content is gone!

This is not good at all! I noticed a forum post stating that a file was not available, so I checked it out. It looks like all of the BibleWorks Blog files have perished (all of those nifty add-ons - databases and chm files down the drain). I'm going to contact yahoo and see what can be done (if anything). The yahoo site back-up system does not even have the files!

New Version: Nova Vulgata!

Just released for download for BibleWorks 7 users, the Nova Vulgata, which is the official Latin version of the Roman Catholic Church. This new version will have the version ID "NOV." Already BibleWorks has the Clementine Vulgate (version ID VUL and VUO which is the same as the VUL except for the fact that it does not include the Apocrypha, has been remapped to match the King James Version with respect to verse numbers and its Psalms are from the Hebrew based work of Jerome, rather than the LXX-based work).

So if you count that all up, that would make three different Latin versions of the Vulgate in some way shape or form. If you want to know more about some of the differences between the Clementine Vulgate and the Nova Vulgata you could always start with a simple place like Wikipedia which identifies a few differences between them.......

.....Or you can be brave and see if you spot any yourself by turning on BibleWorks version comparison mode:

Go to Tools: Text Comparison Settings
Add VUL VUO NOV.
Pick an appropriate highlighting setting and click Enable
Click Apply and then Close.
In the command line type "nov" and then type "d c" (clears all other versions except display version).
Click in the Browse Window (the part which has the text of the Bible) and type "B" (for browse mode) on your keyboard.

All highlighted portions are words that are different as compared to the VUL and VUO versions. If you want to see what the other versions have, you can simply type "d vul" or "d vuo" or "d vul vuo" in the command line. Just don't forget to toggle back out of the BROWSE mode (either click in the Browse Window and type "B" or click on the pair of shoes footprint just above the text in the Browse Window.

Creating Bibleworks Modules from Word or HTML

A BibleWorks user has offered more help on teaching other users how to made more user (HTML-based) modules for BibleWorks:

Format the webpage in Word. Make sure you use styles (heading 1, heading 2, etc). These will become your table of contents.
Use msword2chm to convert the Word document to compiled help. You can get msword2chm for free here.
Extract the chm using 7-zip, available here.
Use tidy to clean up the HTML. Tidy is available here:

From a DOS prompt, run the following command (just copy and paste to the DOS prompt)
for %f in (*.htm) do tidy –i –u –w 999999 –m %f
This will tidy all the htm files at once

Add the necessary javascript to each html file with the addBwJs.pl (DOWNLOAD file here!). You must have Perl installed for this to work. Perl can be downloaded from here.

Run addBwJs.pl in the directory with the htm files. They will all be edited automatically.

From the sampleHTMLHelp.zip file (c:\Program Files\Bibleworks 7\sampleHTMLHelp.zip), copy the files bw.js, mymodule.chd and mymodule-books.txt to the htm directory.
Use Bibleworks to tag the htm files

Tools | Build Module Index
Base Directory: Directory containing the htm files
Bookfile name: mymodule-books.txt
Base name: Name of the module
Click Build and Tag.

Use HTML Help Workshop to recompile the HTML. When you create a new project, note that you will already have the HTML files, the index, and the Table of Contents.
Edit mymodule.chd as directed in Bibleworks documentation
Copy *.chm, *.chd, and *.sdx to the databases directory and restart Bibleworks.

NOTE: Be sure to DOWNLOAD this file if you use his process as it is needed in step #5.

Dr. Andrew Steinmann recently posted a synopsis file for use within BibleWorks which will be very valuable to people who are looking at some of the later traditions of the Hebrew Bible. The BibleWorks program includes a Synopsis window which allows users to see multiple books of the Bible in sync in a synopsis mode. While the synoptic study of the Bible is more famous among the four Gospels, the Synopsis tool can be used for other purposes as well and this is a good way to see the relation between a number of books so one can investigate the relationship between them. Check it out, you'll be surprised at how much overlap there is!

New Modules Iliad and Odyssey Commentaries

The best just got better. In addition to being the only place to get a morphological text of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, now you can use some of the old school commentaries to help you read along in the Homeric texts.

First is a 3-for-1 commentary set which includes the following commentaries

Allen Rogers Benner [1903], Selections from Homer's Iliad, with an introduction, notes, a short Homeric grammar, and a vocabulary.
Walter Leaf [1900], The Iliad, edited, with apparatus criticus, prolegomena, notes, and appendices.
Thomas D. Seymour [1891], Homer's Iliad, Books I-III and Homer's Iliad, Books IV-V.

The second commentary set is for the Odyssey and it includes only one commentary, but it is, nevertheless, a good one:

W. Walter Merry; James Riddell; D. B. Monro [1886], Homer's Odyssey.

Both commentaries function quite similarly and, while being usefully run in BibleWorks, they run as stand-alone HTML help files as well. In order to use the files profitably in BibleWorks, unzip the contents of both to the C:\Program Files\BibleWorks 7\databases folder. The next time you run BibleWorks they will show up under the Resources menu under a category called "Classics Resources."

Hebrew Accent Color File and Consonantal Text

Here are a couple of additions that arose from the BibleWorks forums:

1. Hebrew consonantal text (DOWNLOAD): This version is the same textually as the BibleWorks standard WTT text, except this is without any vowel pointings. See how good your Hebrew is now!

2. Accent Color file (DOWNLOAD): This colour file colourises the JDP version in BibleWorks so that conjunctive and disjunctive accents may be distinguished at a glance: conjunctive accents are shaded yellow, disjunctive accents are shaded green.

It's been a long time between posts! This is not completely by choice, but due to the nature of the academic cycle and being so busy! I have also noticed with other blogs on my blogroll that after a while many of them stop being nearly so active because blogs actually are a lot of work to keep up. Even more so with this one because it entails a lot of work before anything can even be posted. However, since things have been so quiet here lately, let me remind you of other helpful things.

First of all, BibleWorks has recently released A Practical Grammar for Classical Hebrew by Jacob Weingreen, available as a module add-on. BibleWorks' version costs $49, while I see the Amazon price for the print book is $53, so for a little less than the real book you get all the usual features of a digital module in BibleWorks. While I learned Hebrew using a different grammar, my professor did highly recommend Weingreen's grammar and when I had the chance to buy a used copy at a local bookstore (why they had a copy of a Hebrew grammar floating around sure beats me), I jumped at it and I can say that it is a very nice beginning level grammar. Definitely not in the league of Waltke-O'Connor or Joüon-Muraoka, but helpful nevertheless for those who like grammars.

Second, BibleWorks has recently started a section on their website for classroom tips. So far there are seven tips up and more expected to be added later. These are the sort of things Jim and I have hoped to have on this blog as well, but we have not been very successful at implementing this. Also, related to this, if you haven't added Mark Hoffman's blog called Biblical Studies and Technological Tools, please do so now. Mark has also helped fill a gap as he rather routinely highlights specific uses not only of BibleWorks, but also Logos software and often compares and contrasts the two, noting strengths and weaknesses of both pieces of software.

Third, BibleWorks has a sale going on until Nov. 30 for users of older BW versions. If you're not yet living in BW7, now is as good a time as any to sign on. Buy now and put it under the Christmas tree for later :) The sale has caused some on the BW forums to speculate whether this means BW8's release is imminent, but BW staff has assured customers that this is a special treat for users to upgrade and not a way to cop people out of money only to find out that a new release is just weeks away. So if the burning question in your heart is when is BW8 going to be released, the answer is: not for a while. However, when it is released, you can be sure there will be lots of new features, bells and whistles that make you drool.

Fourth, a question for the readers. As I have worked to provide a lot of classical Greek text resources, I am wondering how you find them helpful or whether you do at all. How do you use them? What else would you like to see added? Etc.?

New Module: Last Twelve Verses of Mark by John Burgon

For those who are interested in textual criticism, it is hard to imagine not being unaware of the various controversies over the ending of the Gospel of Mark. John Burgon wrote a book on that very controversy way back in 1871 and it has remained a very influential book on that topic. Burgon sets out to show that the ending of Mark can be shown to be reliable based on extant manuscripts of the Bible. If you're interested in how text critics do their work, sit down with Burgon and you get a feel for some of the issues involved in the process.

BibleWorks user Scott Jones gracious provided this text which he manufactured digitally. He holds copyright on the digital text as such and so any other uses of this text outside of its present form will require his permission. You can contact him via the email address provided in the Burgon BibleWorks module. User-database: Miles Coverdale version (1535) of the Bible

Thanks to Bob Venem who has put together a few other great modules on the early English Bible we now have another version at our fingertips.

While I personally haven't much experience with Miles Coverdale's version, I was able to learn from Wikipedia that Coverdale was not proficient with either Hebrew or Greek (hardly the first!), and so made his translation from "'five soundry interpreters' in Latin, Enlgish and 'Douche' (German)." So while it may not be great for exegesis, it will be useful to those who are interested in early versions of the Bible in English.

User-database: Gorgias' Enconium of Helen Greek and English

It's been a busy summer and it may get busier once school begins. Jim has done a wonderful job of filling in for me while I've been busy this summer getting married, honeymooning, relocating, etc. I am about to start a new PhD program and I've been very busy preparing myself for all the demands that will make on my life, but I just finished a major translation project I had been working on so I figured it was a good time to pause and give something back to the BibleWorks community. (notice how many times I used "busy"??)

The latest release is a short, but good one. It is Gorgias' Enconium of Helen. Of course Gorgias is one of those famous names in classical history. He flourishes during the time of Socrates and is one of the sophists (teachers of rhetoric) who were rather looked down upon by Socrates but whom many associated with Socrates much to Socrates' detriment. One of the main things sophists were known for was their ability to make the lesser argument the greater, i.e. to be able to argue both sides of any issue. In our age, this sort of thing is connected with postmodern relativism and how everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but that there is no absolute right or wrong, black or white. While postmodernism is not the same as the line of thinking from Gorgias' time it is interesting to see how some things never change (how very un-postmodern?)

Linking to the Libronix BDAG, EDNT, and TDNT also.

In the previous post on linking to the LSJ, I forgot to note that you can also link to BDAG, EDNT and TDNT using a similar set up.

To do this, you would have to replace the last set of numbers with the
appropriate code.

Now, to find the appropriate code in Libronix yourself is easy. Open up the resource you wish to link to, and then either click Alt+Ctrl+C, or go to the "Favorites" menu and select "Copy Location to Clipboard." Then paste the text into MSWord or a text editor. For instance, the link to the "New American Standard Hebrew-Aramaic and Greek Dictionaries" is:

Now you can see a bunch of gobbledygook* in the link above (% signs followed by letters & numbers instead of dashes & slashes, spaces, etc.). A little trick to get rid of the gobbledygook is to paste the text into the "Hex Value" field of this ASCII converter and click the "Decode Hex to ASCII" button. You may have to copy and paste the resultant code (that appears in the "ASCII Text" field) back into the "Hex Value" field a second time and click the "Decode Hex to ASCII" button yet again to get it to display the code without the gobbelty-gook. When you're all done, the resultant link will look like this:

The last part of the link above (in red) represents the "name" of the resource in Libronix to which you are building the link. Note that the same numbers are available at the end of the link before you got rid of the gobbledygook.

Linking to the LSJ in Libronix

A BW user recently asked on the forum how to link BibleWorks to Logos' version of the LSJ. I posted a response on the forum, but I figured it would be good to post on the blog as well.

The first step is to open up the ELM (External Links Manager). Do this by either clicking proper button:

...or go to the "Resources" menu item and select "Edit external links":

This will open up the ELM:

Click the "New" button.

Select options and enter information as shown in the screen shot above [note fields in the red boxes]. Copy the following line of code into "Web page, file to run or executable to run" field.

Another option is to open your ShellExec.txt file. This file is found in your c:\program files\bibleworks 7\init directory. At the very bottom of the text, paste the following code.

You will probably have to renumber the "External Link #" (second line, in green). Make sure this is a unique number sequential to the number of the previous external link.

Save the file.

You should be able to right-click a word in a Greek text, select the "Liddell-Scott-Jones (Logos)" option, and open up to the correct entry in the LSJ in Libronix.

Note that this "right click" will only work in versions that have a corresponding morphological version (e.g., BGT & BGM, PHI & PHM, etc.).

It should be noted that both Libronix and BibleWorks have their own electronic versions of the LSJ. One marked difference between the two is that the Libronix version integrates all of the supplemental corrections and entries with the main entries. BibleWorks keeps the supplemental material separate. While this blog has obvious loyalties, I commend Logos for opening up their program to links from external applications. This certainly helps those who don't have the money to shell out for both versions (not that anyone would)!

New! Coptic New Testament Versions

J. Warren Wells of Sahidica.org has graciously permitted BibleWorks users to use his suite of New Testament Coptic texts. Three new versions are available:

Sahidic Coptic New Testament (SANT)
Bohairic Coptic New Testament (BONT)
New Testament according to the Egyptian Greek (NTEG)

Here's a screen shot that shows the Greek text reconstructed from the Sahidic Coptic version compared against the BGT. It also shows the Bohairic and Sahidic texts in parallel:Release notes:

The two Coptic (SANT, BONT) databases do not use a standard BibleWorks font. Instead, you must install the Uncial Sans Serif font (UncialSS.ttf) into your c:\windows\fonts directory.
Command line searches will work in the Coptic texts, but the command line will not display characters correctly.
The Coptic texts have been defined as "English" texts. Unfortunately the VDC would not allow them to be compiled as "other," and it does not give a "Coptic" option. [This probably explains the previously mentioned problem with the command line.]
The NTEG has been compiled for use with standard BibleWorks Greek fonts. This facilitates the comparison of the reconstructed Egyptian texts against other BW Greek texts.
The compiler of these BibleWorks files does not know Coptic (yet), so those who do have facility with the language are welcome to make suggestions.
To install:
1. Unzip the coptic.zip into your C:\program files\bibleworks 7\userdb folder.
2. Install the UncialSS.ttf font in your fonts folder (see above).
3. Copy the .bww files in the unzipped "coptic" folder to your \bibleworks 7\databases file.
4. Use the Version Database Compiler to compile the various texts. (The three .ddf files are each contained in their own folder, e.g. \coptic\sahidic_nt\sant.ddf, etc.)

Keil and Delitzsch now include the additional pages mentioned by Adelphos (introductory chapters to the books of Moses, the Prophets etc.). You may need to install the attached fonts to get these pages to display the Greek and Hebrew correctly.

The updated Calvin's Commentaries simply corrects a few minor errors.

OT in the NT with BibleWorks

Mark Vitalis Hoffman of Luther Theological Seminary has put together a tutorial on the use of the Old Testament in Matthew 4:4. In this PowerPoint tutorial, he demonstrates how to use BibleWorks 7 to investigate the various issues with interpreting the OT in the NT. (See his blog post.) I have not had a chance to check out the presentation, but given that the topic is on "oldinthenew" and BibleWorks (2 of my favorite things), I figured that it would be good to give everyone a heads up.

I hope we see more of this kind of tutorial in the future.

Jerome's Latin Psalter based on the Hebrew

Delitzsch Hebrew New Testament

Ewan MacLeod is at it again. This time he's proofread and compiled the Hebrew New Testament by Franz Delitzsch. MacLeod states:

This is a very good complement to the current Salkinson-Ginsburg Hebrew New Testament in BW. Both were made shortly before Modern Hebrew was created by Eliezer ben Yehuda, yet the Delitzsch HNT in particular flows very fluently, and still sounds good today. If you turn the Text Comparison facility on to compare HNT and DLZ, you will see that there is a great deal of similarity between the two.

Peshitta NT in Hebrew with Vowel Pointing

Ewan MacLeod has made available the Peshitta New Testament with Hebrew letters and vowel pointing.

In contrast to the current PEH database, this text contains vowels, which makes it a useful addition to BibleWorks. The presence of vowels makes it easier at times to understand the text, and it helps one learn how to pronounce the text. In addition, there are some minor differences between the two texts. For best use of this text, use the Text Comparison facility in BibleWorks to highlight the differences when you are studying the Peshitta.Text downloaded from the web archive of www.peshitta.org. It is unclear who (if anyone) owns the copyright for this text. An email to the site to request permission to use the text bounced. The current peshitta.org site gives blanket permission to use its materials.

Calvin's Old Testament Commentary

Attie Bogaards has made available Calvin's commentary on the Old Testament. (See here, and here.) This module was made by Willem Swanepoel of Krugersdorp, South Africa. He provides the following notes in the title page:

The source of this implementation was the Online Bible version, the use of which Mr. Larry Pierce kindly agreed to. The Online Bible version was chosen because of the relative easy with which the information could be extracted and converted to HTML, and because it was essentially the only version for which I could obtain permission to use it for BibleWorks.

This version does, however, differ somewhat from the original commentary in some respects:
Calvin commented on the last four books of Moses and on the first three Gospels in the form of a harmony. Online Bible deviated from the sequence of the commentary by reverting to the sequence of the Bible. This Bible sequence has been retained in the BibleWorks version. The Online Bible notes showing the original sequence were also retained in the text, and are hyper-linked.
Footnotes in Online Bible are given after the commentary on each verse or range of verses. This format was also retained. To keep additional editing of the text to a minimum, the footnotes were not hyperlinked. It is therefore unfortunately necessary to scroll down to the footnotes when required. Hyperlinking the footnotes would more than double the effort of an already very lengthy task.
I trust that this commentary will add to the value of your BibleWorks library.

Smyth, Greek Grammar

In what is the first of a few updates, I am happy to release the first edition of Smyth's Greek Grammar. This is a pretty monumental release because of the size and quality of the work. For a long time, this work has only been available digitally as a PDF on Textkit's website or on Perseus, but the dependability of Perseus has been more questionable as of late, which makes that version less useful. I saw long ago that George Somsel began a project to digitalize Smyth on CCEL, but it seems like that has long since stopped. I have grabbed his first couple of pages since I did not have these in my HTML version. I also included at the end an index for Smyth to various works which are found within the text. This is a valuable list, but I have not yet got around to making the links work for it. Kudos to the Greek Geek for those references.

So what works and what doesn't in this release?
You can use this to let me know yourself what is or isn't working, but here are some of the things I know of:

Most of the links should work that do not contain letters in them. So a link that says "cross 832" should work, but link "823 a" probably doesn't. The fix is fairly simple, i just need to add a "_" to the links (and finish adding anchors where they do not exist)

Page numbers have anchors and they are the primary means for getting around on the left-hand pane. (But I only have the table of contents for Part One and Part Three up)

Part Two on Inflection and especially Part Four on Syntax will be slow to load because they are very large HTML files. In the future I will try to chop up these files into smaller bites so they load faster.

I have not read the entire text so I don't know if there are any major typos or text issues. There are bound to be some since the file is large.

If you notice anything else you can let me know. As of right now though the problem isn't that I haven't found the mistakes, it's that I haven't had the time to fix them. So if you want to help out cleaning up any of the files, please let me know! Meanwhile, enjoy what does work about these files.

Update: Goodwin's Grammar

New to Goodwin's Greek Grammar is added functionality to make it more useful as a reference text.

Now when you have it loaded in BibleWorks it will offer links in the Resource Summary Window based on over 20 syntactical categories like the cases, moods, pronouns which will instantly jump you to the relevant portions of Goodwin's Grammar.

Take a look for instance at John 16:1. When I mouse over the word ὑμῖν, Goodwin now provides instant links to the following syntactic categories which pertain to this word: Pronouns, Personal Pronouns, and Dative Case.

Then clicking on one of these will automatically load the Goodwin Grammar to the appropriate spot. Neat huh?

To get this feature you could redownload the entire Goodwin grammar, but that isn't especially recommended since it's over 20MB. Instead, just download this short goodwingr.chd, save it in your subdirectory of BibleWorks called "databases" (overwriting the old file), restart BibleWorks and you will have the new special features.

Vocab Module: LXX Vocabulary

BibleWorks user Jackson Atkins submitted a vocabulary file for the BibleWorks Vocabulary Module which contains words used in the LXX 100+ times but that do not occur in the New Testament 10+ times (a pool which includes 89 words). The frequency numbers and definitions were made from the LEH Septuagint lexicon and proper names were omitted.

Jackson writes: I hope this vocab file will help people to explore and use the LXX more in their studies and ministries. I am currently working on an extended vocab file that includes all the words that are in the LXX 100+ times but not in the NT 25+ times (241 words). However, I have no idea when I will complete this file.

New Module - An Elementary Latin Dictionary, Charlton Lewis

A few blog entries ago I hinted that there would be some new fun tools for Latinists in BibleWorks. Well here is the first, a real treat for Latinists/Classicists: the release of a high class Latin lexicon for use in BibleWorks!

This lexicon is built as HTML module which means that it can be used as a stand-alone, outside of BibleWorks. Initially, it loads a little slowly because it is such a large database, but once you begin using it, it navigates very quickly and is quite responsive. In some ways it can be quicker to use this lexicon than the paper kind!

In BibleWorks, you can load the file via the Resources menu, and within that under Latin Resources.

While BibleWorks currently does not yet have lemmatized Latin databases and I have also not yet released any lemmatized Latin databases (although hopefully someday...), the current functionality of the lexicon is a bit limited. However, if you stick around for a few more blog posts, I'll show you how, with the availability of a lemmatized Latin database, the functionality of this lexicon will be virtually seamless!

New Module - Goodwin, A Greek Grammar

The latest offering is one that has long been available on TextKit and CCEL. I had always been hoping to find a text/HTML version of it online somewhere, but I haven't yet. Nevertheless, the page images are still valuable and so now we are pleased to release Goodwin's Greek Grammar for use in BibleWorks 7! Sure it's not as good as the real thing, but the price is right isn't it??

This is what the blurb in TextKit had to say:

Goodwin's Greek Grammar stands with Hadley's Greek Grammar as one of the most widely used and longest running Greek Grammars in America. The grammar has gone through many editions and reprints for over 130 years, with the last major edition appearing in 1930.

Goodwin first earned academic recognition for his Syntax of the Moods and Tenses of the Greek Verb which was first published in 1865. Five years later in 1870 he created the first edition of Greek Grammar which was a brief 235 page textbook called Elementary Greek Grammar. In 1879 the grammar was later revised to 393 page edition and renamed to A Greek Grammar. In 1892, Goodwin revised his grammar yet again to the 451 page edition entitled, A Greek Grammar Revised and Enlarged. It is the 'revised and enlarged' edition which was in widespread use and it is this edition that is available for download. The next major edition, the Goodwin and Gulick edition, occurred 38 years later in 1930 and was largely rewritten by Charles Gulick. The Goodwin and Gulick edition can be purchased new to this day.It should be made absolutely clear that Goodwin's Greek Grammar is what is known as a reference grammar and it is not intended for beginners. Historically, students used this grammar in conjunction with a reader by the same publisher. The reader would provide notes and references back to the grammar for further help and clarification. See Goodwin's First Four Book's of Xenophon's Anabasis as an example.

Goodwin's Greek Grammar use as a reference grammar for the modern student is now largely replaced by Smyth's massive and highly praised 800 page Greek Grammar which was first published in 1920. Still, for intermediates Goodwin offers more succinct discussions and for all learners an additional perspective is at times very helpful. Part IV, Syntax, should prove to be especially helpful for today's learners and is well worth exploration.

New Module - Plumley's Introductory Coptic Grammar

Just hours after a user on the BibleWorks user forums wondered if it would be possible to convert J. Martin Plumley's Introductory Coptic Grammar from HTML to a BibleWorks user-module, Pasquale showed that it could be done and came through with such speed that it makes me look like a turtle. I still have like ten other things I'm trying to do, but haven't finished and before I could even look at the files, he finished compiling and converting it. So now you are the beneficiaries!

The zip file contains the grammar itself and fonts. The fonts need to be installed to Windows (by moving them to the \fonts\ directory of Windows. The grammar files can be placed in the \databases\ subdirectory of BibleWorks 7.

Updates: Bishops', King James 1611, Wycliffe

As was promised earlier, Bob Venem with the help of others (especially Mark Eddy) have finished verse-mapping files (.VMF) for the three olde English versions Bishops', King James 1611, and Wycliffe, which are now available. The files will look the same if you have already downloaded them, but included will be a file that ends in the extension .vmf. You will want to place the .vmf file in the subdirectory/folder called "databases" in your BibleWorks directory. The verse-mapping file ensures that when you read a verse in these versions, even if their versification doesn't agree with another Bible version you are reading, that you will get that same verse as long as it is contained in that Bible version.

For instance if you look in the browse window in the ESV for Psalm 3:5 you will get: ESV Psalm 3:5 I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the LORD sustained me.

but if you also have the Hebrew WTT shown, you will see that the corresponding verse to that in Hebrew is not referred to as Psalm 3:5, but Psalm 3:6. The reason that you get the correct verse to show up (even if it is a different number) is because someone spent the time making a verse-map for the ESV and WTT.

Now this same feature will extend to these three Bibles.

User-database: Horace's Works (Latin x2 and English)

Well it's been a quiet time lately, but both of your hosts have successfully completed major portions of their Master's degree programs. In addition to that, I have been very busy attempting to put together some major projects for BibleWorks users. Trust me, you'll love 'em!

But meanwhile, I was able to complete a first edition of Horace's works in two Latin versions and one English translation! The difficulty with finding English translations for poetical works is that line breaks never agree with the Latin line breaks which makes it impossible to line up texts without lots of work. But then again it takes a lot of work to translate the Latin into English in the same number of lines and still maintain a good poetic feel to the text.

In any event, Horace is a great poet who lived during the time of the great transition from Caesar of the name Julius to Caesar of the name Augustus. If you need some more basic material you can start at Google or perhaps Wikipedia.

Update: Wycliffe translation of the Vulgate

Bob Venem has finished an update of the Wycliffe Middle English translation of the Vulgate. He fixed the verse-mapping so that it will work smoother in the Browse Window and hopefully line up properly with other verses.

He provides the following notes with this release:

WYC contains the exact number of verses as the VUL, minus the Apocrypha.
The WYC.vmf (this is the verse mapping file) is the VUL.vmf file minus the Apocrypha references.
While the verses are aligned, the text used for WYC (from the Wesleyan Study Center) has some peculiar verse divisions compared to the VUL (or the KJV, for that matter). Not having a copy of Wycliffe available to see the original divisions (or if there even are divisions), and not knowing the reasoning used by those who created the Wyclif text files stored at the Wesleyan Study Center, I have left these peculiar divisions intact. If they
prove bothersome, I can re-edit the file to match the Vulgate, but that will take a fair amount of time, so I am in no rush.

BibleWorks 7 New Module: Joüon-Muraoka Biblical Hebrew Grammar

Although I am partial to Greek resources, I am still excited by news of a new module being released today for BibleWorks 7:

Don't be fooled. There is another edition of Joüon-Muraoka floating around out there, but this module represents the latest edition, published in 2006 by the Pontifical Biblical Institute, but more information on the print edition at Eisenbrauns:

Already well known in its two-volume first edition [«Subsidia Biblica», n. 14], this is the most extensive revision yet of one of the most complete Hebrew Grammars available in English. That first edition of 1991 was, in its turn, based on the original work in French by Paul Joüon published for the first time in 1923. This edition brings the work up to the present by taking account of developments in our understanding of the Hebrew language during the intervening years. For the first time the work is presented in a single volume. Professor Muraoka hopes that this helps to make the book more attractive and the content easier to use. As with the earlier edition students of the Old Testament, Hebrew and Semitics who have a basic knowledge of Biblical Hebrew will find much useful insight and information here.

Well then the next person tells him how much he paid for the same thing and instantly the man is torn apart because he realizes he paid far more than the other person.

Well today is not one of those days. Today is an update to a wonderful Bible Atlas/Dictionary Combination project. It's not only a Bible dictionary, it's also an atlas, it's also a way to walk through the physical lands of the Scriptures.

Oxford UP is having its twice a year (I believe) sale where you can get a great deal on real books. You will not find better prices for new books than what they offer here. (and if you can find better prices, someone needs to tell me!!)

The big Liddell-Scott-Jones is on sale for $80 (sic)

and the equally large Oxford Latin Dictionary is also on sale for $135.

In other words, those are both really great deals. Buy now, pay later.*

* Although I am not advising abusing your credit cards or buying a lexicon for yourself while letting your significant other go without some other necessity like an iPod just because you had to have an expensive lexicon. That's just silly.

Using Latin in BibleWorks

As promised, I thought I'd say a bit more about using Latin in BibleWorks. Right now it has its limitations, the biggest thing being that there is presently no Latin dictionary in BibleWorks. The reason for this is the lack of an e-text for any of the existing Latin dictionaries out there. BibleWorks could theoretically pay a lot of money to digitize a text themselves, but it's probably not the best use of their means and so for now anyway, one has to accept the fact that BibleWorks is still limited in this area. (For what it's worth, if you are aware of an e-text of any good Latin dictionaries, email the BibleWorks staff and maybe that will help get it included in a future update of BibleWorks)

However, it's not completely useless. In BibleWorks 7, the use of the External Link Manager greatly enhances the shortcomings within BibleWorks proper by being able to call up resources outside BibleWorks. Don't ask me how the External Link Manager works because I wouldn't be able to tell you, but let me show you how you can use it to help you slog through some Latin prose.

There are two ways to edit the External Links Manager. I will walk you through both ways.

First, through the menu system. Select Resources: Edit External Links. That will pop up a window like thus:
It's been a while since I've played around with this, so I can't remember if BW7 comes loaded with the option to use Perseus to lookup morphology for Latin. At this point it doesn't really much matter since Perseus' website has been down for over 10 days and doesn't appear to be making a quick recovery. So let's add a different method which will give both morphology and lexicon options. Click New and fill in the blanks so that your screen looks like the following:

The second way to edit the External Links is to open the text file called ShellExec which is found in the directory C:\Program Files\BibleWorks 7\init\ and add the following entry (use the next consecutive number for the External Link #):

And once you select that, it will load the website in your default Internet browser (note: an Internet connection *IS* required in order to make this work).

Ta-da! And that is just another example of BibleWorks' ability to improvise so that while it may still not have all the resources someone might ever want, it can still make a few adjustments to help you out. For more on the External Link Manager, go visit the Official BibleWorks forums!

User-database: Suetonius (English and Latin)

It's taken a long time, but I finally put together a database of Suetonius' influential piece called the Lives of the Twelve Caesars. It doesn't much matter if you believe it's historical, fiction or a little of both, it is very fascinating reading for the bits and pieces of life that Suetonius decides to pass on to his readers. At times perhaps a little dry, but at other times very much like the soap opera culture of today. Maybe you won't catch all of his innuendo in the somewhat humane English translation, but it's there in the Latin. Trust me.

This is a very complex piece mostly because I chose to use a very complex (yet most excellent) source for the database, namely Bill Thayer's wonderful website Lacus Curtius.

Thus it's only fair to include a few notes before you get too far into the text itself in BibleWorks.

Here are a number of issues to be aware of:

Both the Latin and the English contain Greek characters (something BibleWorks is not yet well suited for). All of the Greek I have transposed into the BGreek Transliteration style (see this website for an explanation.)
Both the Latin and the English contain markings for notes. The note files themselves are included as Word documents. Perhaps in the future I will find a way to make them more functional within BibleWorks, but for now this will have to suffice. If you want the real deal with the notes experience, you should really use the website which carries this edition which I borrowed. Bill Thayer has spent who knows how many hours making this work very well annotated according to its initial publication with a few of his personal notes added. Once you have this database loaded into BibleWorks, if you click in the Browse Window area and press the letter "N" that will toggle Translator Notes on and off. This will show or hide the annotations which alert you to whether there are notes on a given portion of the text or not. In order to test this feature out go to S01 9:3 (Divus Julius). If you have clicked on the Browse Window and type N you should see a toggle on and off of a superscripted 2 after the word Ambranos. That is how the Translator notes work. If you want to find out what the actual note read, you will have to look it up in the accompanying Word file, or else you could visit the Bill Thayer website above.
In a few places in the text there are raised dots "•" These indicate notes/hyperlinks that were present on Bill's web page. If this interests you, go to his web page to find out what the note is.
Source. As I said, you will not find a better edition of Suetonius' Live of the Caesars than Bill Thayer's. This edition is drawn from his work. Thayer based his edition on the Loeb Classical Library public domain Suetonius book. The Latin text is that of Maximilian Ihm in the Teubner edition of 1907, with cosmetic changes as printed in the Loeb Classical Library edition, 1913-1914. The English translation is by J. C. Rolfe, printed in the same edition. Both text and translation are in the public domain. Once again, huge props to Bill Thayer and his work found at his website.

New Module - Keil and Delitzsch OT Commentary

I'm not sure this new module really needs much of an introduction. Love it or hate it, the Keil and Delitzsch Old Testament Commentary is a classic in conservative scholarship. This is not a commentary in the style of Matthew Henry or even the Popular Commentary posted on the blog earlier. This is a technical and critical look at the Hebrew Bible with all of the insight of a past age ready to speak. This one is a must for anyone in the exegetical field, even if you don't agree with Keil and Delitzsch, they will make you think.

Yet another addition by Bob Venem to the early English Bible collection is the Bishops' Bible edition of 1568. This version is a precursor to the King James Version and perhaps will be a little easier to understand than the Wycliffe edition. While the King James Version has become the gold star, the Bishops' Bible is an important piece in the history of the translation of the English Bible.

New Modules - Nadal's Gospel Illustrations and Doré Bible Gallery

Two new unique additions to the BibleWorks 7 free user add-on modules involve illustrations of the Gospel stories. They are interesting because of their antiquity (although some would say a few hundred years wouldn't quite qualify as antiquity), and also because they show that just as a written commentary can be an interpreter of the Bible, so also pictures and all forms of art can also interpret the Bible and arguably reach even more people. A picture is worth a thousand words, well then these additions should equal a few sizable tomes.

Jerome Nadal's Evangelicae Historiae Imagines ("Illustrations of the Gospel Stories") date from 1593-1595. This is a collection of 153 engravings meant for use in prayer and meditation of the Gospel stories. Nadal is a historical figure some may not be familiar with but he was one of the ten founding members of the Society of Jesus (or the Jesuits). The pictures are tagged to the Bible verses which they are depicting and each picture is scene which is explained by Latin captioning below. While it's always nice to know what the Latin is saying, if you are reading along with the English (or your preferred language), you'll probably be able to figure out what the Latin is saying since these pictures are a visual interpretation of the narrative of the text. If you are interesting in learning more about it, see this website.

The Doré Bible Gallery is another module which covers a number of different scenes in the Bible. These date from the 1860's. While the author of the pictures may be less famous, no doubt you will recognize a few of these pictures because they are widely used or imitated. Customer service, upgrades and backwards functionality?

I'm hesitant to even post anonymous comments, but I could not let this comment go unanswered. Regarding the ability to create custom CHM modules in BW7, "Anonymous" said:

I know that this is not a Bibleworks forum but I find this very disappointing that previous versions of Bibleworks do not support these modules. I bought BW6 only a couple of months before BW7 came out so that probably only adds to my disappointment.

I understand your frustration not having the added functionality of v.7, but please consider the following:

The upgrade is well worth the price (even if you paid for v. 6 a few months earlier). To get the same texts, resources and added functionality that you get in the upgrade in any other Bible software, you would have to pay far and above the $150 upgrade (See this BW Forum post.)
BibleWorks does their best to help users in your situation. In fact they offer a 30 day trial period with a money-back guarantee. They also allowed users who had purchased v.6 right before purchasing v.7 to recieve a substantial discount. (See this BW Forum thread.)
It is unrealistic to expect ANY software company to make new features of new versions automatically a part of older versions. If companies did so, there would be no reason to purchase the upgrade; they would not recieve new revenue for the purchase of the new versions, and eventually the software company would fold.
Again and again BibleWorks has released free updates (including added texts and functionality that would be worthy of holding for a new-version). For instance, they have added Robertson's Greek Grammar free of charge to users of v.7. You would have to pay extra for this anywhere else.

Overall I have never been disappointed with BibleWorks' customer service. BibleWorks has done their absolute best to pack the most important original language resources into a program that is underpriced even at full price.

On Modules

It seems a number of people have lately asked whether the Custom modules which are available for download here work in versions other than BibleWorks 7. The answer is no, Custom HTML help modules that work within the BibleWorks are a new feature only to BibleWorks 7.

The longer answer is that it is a really cool feature that is only increasing in value the more the days pass because more users are getting together to make more resources available for other users.

Essentially these modules are HTML Help files which have been tagged by a BibleWorks scripting program which is what makes it possible for the Resource Window to link to a given resource when it is cited in that resource and it also makes Scriptural links within a given HTML help module work as pop-ups. I'll talk more about how to make these files in a future post, but for now, how about showing how they work in BibleWorks 7.

Cool Feature #1:

Custom Modules act as footnotes within the Bible, by alerting you to the fact that a given module references a specific Bible verse.

They do this by showing up in the Resource Summary Window when you are on a given Bible verse.

So in the picture above (click on it to make it larger), in the Browse Window I am looking at Psa 51:5 (English / Psa 51:7 (MT) / Psa 50:7 (LXX)), but I see in the Resource Window to the right of the Browse Window that there are a number of resources that have citations to this verse. Specifically, I see that Bente's Book of Concord has a reference to Psa 51:5 in the Smalcald Articles. Now since I don't have the Smalcald Articles memorized along with the Small Catechism, I might wonder, Gee, I wonder why Martin Luther was citing Psa 51:5. I could pull out my Book of Concord to figure this one out, but that's way on the other side of the room. Or I could open up my Book of Concord that I have in Logos, but that would take a minute for the program to load and another minute or two of navigation for me to find it in my resources, etc. At that rate, I'd be better off getting up and picking up the book. Or since I have this resource in BibleWorks, I could just click on it!

Genius idea! So I click.
And bingo. The link not only opens the resource, but it brings you to the exact spot of the reference. Now if you wish to read more, simply scroll around in the module itself. Nice.

Cool Feature #2:

Not only does the BibleWorks scripting tool make links for the Resource Summary window (Cool Feature #1), but it also makes pop-up windows that work within the HTML module. So, I see that in this part of the Smalcald Articles, Luther also lists a few other Scriptural citations. Now since I only have the Bible memorized up through Genesis, I'm not quite sure what all these verses are referring to simply by seeing their Scriptural reference. Now one way to fix this problem would be to close or minimize the module and type in the reference, but that would take like 15 seconds. 15 seconds? Come on that's way too time consuming. How about if you just place your mouse on the reference *in* the module. Now you don't have to do anything at all, BibleWorks produces a pop-up window which will tell you what that verse says.

Classy. Now if you dislike the pop-up Bible versions, you can easily change which versions show up in these little pop-ups in BibleWorks (Go to View on the main menu and then Choose Popup Versions).

And what if you weren't interested in all this goose-chasing, but what you wanted was to quickly see what was in another one of those resources, let's say, Kretzmann's Popular Commentary. What would you do? Well you could surf on over to the Kretzmann Commentary website, but maybe you left your internet connection at home. So what are you to do? Oh I know, click the link!

And there you have it. Go have some fun and see what the commentary has to say.

New Module - Book of Concord (Bente, Triglotta ed.)

More fun for Lutherans out there. I finally finished cleaning up an edition of Bente's Book of Concord, a public domain text which is available at the Book of Concord website. Of course this edition is spruced up a little bit more, with the most useful part for BibleWorks users being the fact that the Book of Concord Scripture references will now link up in BibleWorks in the Resource Summary Window.

There are a few spotty places where the links don't work completely (a large number of them come at the end of the Small Catechism), because the links are for entire chapters rather than specific verses. I may get these cleaned up in the future, but it's not a really high priority on my list right now because of other things I have going. The files are certainly available for others to edit, correct and tweak.

If there is anyone ambitious enough to make more Concord-related files out there available, let me know. I'm currently working on a lectionary commentary project, but if anyone knows if there would be any copyright issues with making a module out of Bul's Notes, let me know. I'd love to add that to the bunch.

New Module - Kretzmann's Popular Commentary

I have finally completed the finishing touches on Paul Kretzmann's famous Popular Commentary series so that it now works in and with BibleWorks in the Resource Summary window or stand-alone as an HTML Help file.

The text is all from the Kretzmann Project and my thanks go to them for making this resource available to online users.

This compilation is available as per their provisions: We do claim the copyright on the electronic edition, but only to assure that it is not tampered with. New Module - E-Catena: Allusions from Church Fathers

A brand new addition the BibleWorks user modules is the E-catena. This project is adapted from the wonderful contribution of Peter Kirby's Internet site, http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/e-catena. It contains links in the Resource Summary Window of BibleWorks for New Testament verses which are cited in the CCEL editions of the Ante-Nicene Fathers. Peter Kirby made this initial project public quite some time ago, but only recently have I adapted it for users of BibleWorks.

Note that it will require an Internet connection to get the most out of it because in order to get the full texts of the allusions, the links access the Internet.

I am working on a couple of HTML Help projects for BibleWorks 7. One of those is the English edition of the Book of Concord (Triglotta) by Bente. If there are any people out there who care to help edit this project (which basically amounts to fixing Scriptural links), please let me know. Or if you want to help in the future with any other projects like this let me know via the comments.

Right now the Book of Concord module is completely done, it's just going through quality control, so stay tuned for more information. (By the way, you don't have to be a Lutheran to help, I just figured Lutherans would be the ones most interested.)

Someone must have been really good this year because Christmas is striking early and often. My new hero in life, John Jackson, just completed his ginormous endeavor to tag and lemmatize the entire Homeric/Hesiodic corpus and because he is such a gracious individual he allows me to import this material into BibleWorks. Who's the real winner? We all are! By all means, drop John a note to tell him how awesome he is!

So without further ado. Update your files, because John Jackson has finished and this latest database (HHJ and HJM) includes the Shield of Heracles and all of the Homeric Hymns, lemmatized, tagged and everything. Wow.

The Hesiodic material is based on the Evelyn-White edition, which can be found online via Google.

I have been very busy with school-related projects and homework lately, which means that I have not had much time to spend compiling the latest texts. However, I've been working on Epictetus for a long time and wanted to get it out, even if this edition is only what I might call a "beta" version (i.e. there are numerous errors that still need to be fixed in it, mostly with word breaks between verses and quotation marks).

Nevertheless, I submit for your consumption another famous dead guy who didn't write anything, but had at least one follower who recorded his words (which evidently is a popular theme in ancient cultures).

New Module - Aleppo Codex Index

For some time now, images of the Aleppo Codex (כתר ארם־צובה) have been available online. The website is very well done, with access to high resolution photos of all existing pages of this valuable witness to the Masoretic text. Now, thanks to Pasquale Amicarelli, BibleWorks users can access these photos from their Resource Summary Window with a new CHM module. Users MUST have an active internet connection to access to each photograph. Keep in mind that the text is not complete, as the Wikipedia entry mentions:

[The b]eginning and end of the manuscript are missing, as well as some pages in between. The current text starts with the last word of Deuteronomy 28:17 (ומשארתך, "and your kneading trough"). After that, the books Joshua, Judges, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Zechariah, Malachi, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Psalms, Job, Proverbs, Ruth, Song of Songs follow. The last leaf ends with בנות ציון in Song of Songs 3:11 ("come out, you daughters of Zion...") Liddell-Scott (part two)

BDAG meet your big brother, Liddell-Scott.

As you can tell by this side by side shot, Great Scott makes poor old BDAG look like a dwarf. What you don't see (because I couldn't get the pictures to come out right) is what the books look like inside. Comparing the print of Liddell-Scott to BDAG is like comparing a photo caption text to the front page headline. Furthermore, whereas BDAG's entries are generally differentiated, Liddell-Scott groups as many lexemes together as possible. And the confusing part of it is that these words are grouped together not necessarily because they share meanings but because they share the same letters. Thus in order to find the word εὐλογία you have to look up εὐλογέω. Now in this case you probably could have found the right entry, but in other cases it is much more challenging.

LSJM integrates completely into the Resource Summary window just like any other lexicon. This is part of BibleWorks lexical-grammatical integration which keeps track of all of those pesky citations so you don't have to.
Resource Window integration means two things. First, it means that whenever you are on a word, if that word is in Liddell-Scott (which it will be unless it's some obscure proper noun), you will see the beginning of the entry in the Resource Summary Window. To open the entire entry, just click on the appropriate line in the Resource Window.

In this example, I was holding my mouse over the word καιροὺς in the Browse Window. Because LSJM has this lemma, it appears in the Resource Summary window. Now if I wanted to bring up the LSJM entry in the Lexicon Browser, I would simply click on καιρός in the Resource Summary window.

But if you look carefully below that, you also see a line that says Ref: Gen 1:14. What's that about? This is the second awesome feature of LSJM and its integration into the Resource Summary window. In this case when you are on verses of the Bible which have citations in LSJM, you will know about it without reading every single entry. You will know about it because the Resource Window will say that your given verse has a reference in LSJM and it's all right there. This is pretty awesome because it means you don't have to click on every single word to know if LSJM has something to say about that given word in that given text. [Note: That doesn't mean that if LSJM does NOT have a reference that what LSJM says is irrelevant or useless. LSJM will *always* be useful because it will help you learn shades of meaning that a given word had in other texts. This can be important for determining whether a word can or can't mean X by looking at how it was used in other places.]

Now at 9 o'clock in the picture, you will see bold-faced Greek words and indented Greek words with symbols in front of them. The bold-face word is a head entry as given in the print LSJM. The indented words are all the words you would find in the print LSJM within that entry. In addition to that, the indented information also tells you whether a word is found in the Supplement.

The various symbols mean the following:

Main entry words are in bold.
Supplemental entries are prefixed with a "+", "x" or "*" and subentries are prefixed with a superscripted number indicating order in the main entry.

A "+" indicates a supplemental item that is an addition to a main entry.
An "x" indicates a supplemental entry that is a new lexicon entry.
An "*" indicates a correction to a main entry.

Thus instantly you know that if there is a number by the entry, it is a unique word. If it has another symbol it will be supplementary information. If you click on one of the words marked with the +, x or * you will instantly be taken to the supplementary entry. Quick and easy!

Finally, at 10 o'clock in the picture, you will see the verse pop-up in the Lexicon Browser. Thus, whenever LSJM has biblical citations, you can see within the Lexicon Browser what that verse is. Or if you'd like you can click on the link and it will be brought up in the Browse Window.

Two final pictures demonstrate what I meant about how easy it is to access the supplementary information.Let's say I use the Lexicon Browser to see the word ἀγαπάω in LSJM. If I do that, the word list filters out all words except the relevant hits. In this case, there are two exact hits. One is the main entry, one is the supplementary entry. How easy is it to go back and forth from the main entry to the entry? It's as easy as clicking back and forth from one to the other. No page turning. No opening up new windows. None of that. Click one. Bingo. Click back to the other. Cha-ching. Pretty nice deal if you ask me.If you want to see the bigger picture of what's going on, click the Reload button and you'll get the full word list back and see the complete relationship of these two words according to the full word list.

In closing, I can do no better than echo Mike Bushell's words (since he actually *is* BibleWorks and can actually say and mean stuff):

We believe this to be the most accurate electronic edition of the "Great" Scott available. There are still typos though. The text is huge and represents a humongous amount of work. Oxford is beginning a project now, using our text and other resources, to produce the best text possible. That will be made available to our users (who purchased LSJM) without charge. [more available at the BibleWorks forums.]

From what I have seen I too believe this to be a great package and BibleWorks' commitment gives me confidence that any parts I missed will be covered in the future.

New Module: The Great Scott Lexicon

Any BibleWorks user who is anybody, keeps an eye on the official BibleWorks forums, but just in case someone missed the post, I wanted to bring it to everyone's attention that BW7 now has released the giganto version (yes that is the technical term) of the Liddell-Scott lexicon (referred to in BW7 as LSJM for its main editors Liddell, Scott, Jones and McKenzie). This is "the" Greek lexicon. If I'm lucky there might be another lexicon which surpasses Liddell-Scott in my lifetime, but I highly doubt it. In other words, if you spend the money on this one, you're making a valuable and long-term investment.

This lexicon is different from the Intermediate Liddell-Scott (Middle Liddell) which comes "free" with the BW program in that it is, well, much bigger! Unlike the Middle Liddell which has vague references to who uses words, the Great Scott lexicon uses actual references, which really makes it much more useful!

Recently, classicists have been able to access Great Scott via Perseus, but the BW7 LSJM module has a few distinct advantages.

First, it'll be available on your computer even when you're not connected to the Internet (Perseus lately has been notoriously hard to use because it's been on and off-line so much).
Second, unlike the Perseus LSJ, this version includes the supplementary entries to the Great Scott, which are readily accessible within the BW Lexicon browser.

Now I am probably one of the few out there who own the paper edition of Great Scott (and that is mostly because, as has been mentioned earlier, I am a book fan), but the BW edition of LSJM is sooooo much the superior to the book edition for a few reasons.

First, it is darn near impossible to use the real book because it is so huge, the paper is so thin (I'm afraid to use it lest I tear a page or two right out of it), and the print is so very small. In BW, the lexicon can be as small as your laptop, there will be no papercuts and the text can be as big as your screen can allow.
In addition to that, the supplementary lexical information in the book LSJ is found in the back in supplementary appendices. In other words, if you want to find out any new information about a given lexeme, you have to page through multiple parts of the lexicon in order to find it. Sounds easy enough until you try to keep one finger where you were, and use the others to page forward in the giganto book without tearing any of the pages! Well in BW, all the supplementary information is accessible in an organized and easy-to-use manner. (I'll try to put up a screen shot in a day or so).
BW folks have also worked hard to differentiate the text so that the entries are easier to understand. Specifically what this means is not only is the text in BW's LSJM the same as the written text (including bold and italic font), but LSJM is different than the print book because the entries are broken up with indentations, which make definitions and glosses in the entries so much easier to use. This was not done in the print LSJ because it would have made that volume 4 or 5 times as long, but in the digital world, this is not a problem!

Other reasons why LSJM is super cool:

It will help you plow through some of the classical Greek works I've been releasing for BW.
It will give you the "big" picture of how words in the Biblical corpus (LXX (and earlier), NT, and beyond) are used in other literature and give you citations so you can verify this for yourself.
Did I mention the lexicon has clickable links to the Biblical verses within the entries just like BDAG and other lexica of BW?

Whew. I probably meant to make some grand point at the beginning of this post, but I got carried away. What can I say. This release excites me!

Augustine's Works Module by Pasquale

Blogs as academically useful things...

I'm not sure how big the readership out there is, but this is a call for interaction if you are able. I am wondering how useful people think blogs are or would be for contemporary interaction with the biblical texts, and for my purposes I am thinking mostly on a grammatical level (interpretative and theological moves would indoubtedly come into play, but I'm not coming to that point quite yet).

For instance, would it be something of value if I went through Acts 17, copied footnotes from BDF/Wallace/Robertson/etc on significant features of the text, tried to explain uses of genitive, pariticiples, etc. and put this into a blog post on Acts 17. So if you were looking at Acts 17 and curious about some of its features you could call up that blog and get some more information on it.

Commentaries widely differ in their philosophy. Some of them deal with portions of the text in their original language, but I find very few that answer grammatical relationships that I want answered. I guess they either assume I know the answer and so they let it pass OR I assume they don't know the answer and that's why they let it go.

I know resources like B-Greek exist and it is helpul to search out help there, but in order to get what you want, you have to do a lot of searching. What I'm looking for is a way to bring together grammatical commentary on passages into one place and I'm wondering if a blog would be a proper form.

Obviously even if this were something I did, my "answers" would no doubt err. There might be some question whether this is really an "objective genitive" or something else. Or maybe someone thinks the force of verbal aspect is best brought out another way. A blog could sort of provide for this kind of dialogue (not very well, I'll admit). One could also provide hyperlinks to sub-discussions on specific features of the text....

Anybody have any thoughts on this matter? Is there interest in developing such a thing?

New Module - Codex Bezae

Again, Pasquale has produced an excellent module. This time, he has presented images of the Latin and Greek texts of Codex Bezae (Gregory-Aland no. D or 05). The Wikipedia article on Bezae mentions the following outstanding features:

Matthew 16:2f is present and not marked as doubtful or spurious. The longer ending of Mark is given. Luke 22:43f and Pericope de adultera are present and not marked as spurious or doubtful. John 5:4 is omitted, and the text of Acts is nearly one-tenth longer than the generally received text.

For a transcription of the Greek & Latin text of Bezae for Luke and Acts that notes differences with the NA27 see this French website. An excellent description of Bezae has been provided by Robert Walz. Now BibleWorks users now have images of Alexandrinus, Vaticanus, Sinaiticus, Bezea and the Gospel of Mark in Washingtonius!

As a side note, Wieland Wilker - an avid BibleWorks user - has authored "Codex Bezae and the Da Vinci Code: A textcritical look at the Rennes-le-Chateau hoax." Wilker offers convincing evidence that the fake document is based on a page of Bezae.

Bezae promises to be a very interesting manuscript to study!

User-database: Sophocles' Works (Greek)

I just finished up the conversions for the plays of the Greek tragedian Sophocles. Now they too are accessible within BibleWorks.

A word is needed about the format of the databases. You will find numerous places in the compiled database where lines are empty or left blank. This is because I have followed a pretty slavish adherence to officially documented line numbers of the Greek tragedies so that users will be able to refer to specific entries in Greek grammars and lexica which reference Greek tragedies by line number. I couldn't explain to you why lines are divided as they are, but it was done with the intention that this would make these texts useful and helpful to anyone who is using classical Greek tools.

If you become aware of major flaws in my line numeration, please let me know. Obviously if anyone is very serious about classical Greek study, they will have to go beyond this offering because it is based on a relatively old (and thus public domain) text, namely, Jebb's version. But this will be very helpful to people who wish to continue word studies within BibleWorks itself.

On another note. I have almost completed compiling Latin versions of all of Virgil's works. The link on the files page is up, but the file is not. This will be up later this week probably. In any event there will be a blog post about it when I do complete it.

Codex Sinaiticus module available!

For your viewing pleasure, Pasquale has put together a module with images of Sinaiticus - all tagged to the relevant portions of the New Testament. He has even thrown in images to some of the Apostolic Fathers. As an added feature, this module also contains indexed links to high resolution photos of Sinaiticus as found on the Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts site (www.CSNTM.org).

Vaticanus Update - Images of the entire NT

Pasquale is at it again. This time he's put together a new module that contains images of Codex Vaticanus for the entire New Testament.

This module is very large, as it has two complete editions of Vaticanus.

The first edition which is directly linked to the Resource Summary Window, is the pseudofacsimile of Vaticanus by Giuseppe Cozza-Luzi and Carlo Vercellone (Bibliorum sacrorum Graecus Codex Vaticanus: auspice Pio IX. Pontifice Maximo [Romae: Typis et impensis S. Congregationis de Propaganda Fide, 1869]). In the Gospel of John and in James the pseudofacsimile images have been replaced with better images of the actual Codex Vaticanus.

Each of the images mentioned above is in turn linked to an image of Tischendorf's transcription of Vaticanus (Novum Testamentum Vaticanum: post Angeli Maii aliorumque imperfectos Labores ex ipso codice [Lipsiae: Giesecke et Derient, 1867]).

To install this file, download and unzip into your BibleWorks 7/databases folder. If you have previously installed an earlier edition of Pasquale's Vaticanus module, just let the new unzipped files overwrite them.

New Module — Intro. to Norton's NT Peshitta Trans.

Ewan MacLeod has compiled and tagged a new module which will be of special interest to scholars of the Syriac New Testament:

Norton, William. A Translation of the Peshito-Syriac Text and of the Received Greek Text of Hebrews, James, 1 Peter and 1 John, With an Introduction, on the Peshito-Syriac Text, and The Revised Greek Text of 1881. London: W.K. Bloom, 1889.

In essence, this module is an "extensive introduction" to a translation already included in BibleWorks 7.0 — the Norton Translation of the NT Peshitta (NOR). According to the NOR copyright & source file, this introduction includes a "history of the Peshitta and an analysis of readings compared with the Greek text." It also "has footnotes regarding the variant readings of the Peshitta." Ewan has been kind enough to convert this introduction into a CHM Module, that is completely tagged and tied into the Resource Summary Window. Many thanks, Ewan!

User-database (update): Homer and Hesiod text and morphology

Again with much thanks and praise to John Jackson, I present the Greek text, morphology and English translation to Hesiod's works Theogony and Works and Days.

You will note, these versions (HHJ and HJM) are much different than the other classical Greek databases I have offered. All of the other texts have simply been Greek text. If you wanted to search full forms, you could do so, but you would not be able to search by lemma or by morphology because those texts were not morphologically tagged. However, HHJ and HJM are companion texts which must be compiled together and will then allow you to use the Homer/Hesiod text just like you would use the parsed versions of other Greek databases in BibleWorks (i.e. the LXX/NT, Josephus, Philo and Apostolic Fathers). Check them out and play around with them. You will be amazed!

As Jim said in a previous post, the great thing about BibleWorks is that it allows users to augment and supplement the already amazing package, and all this at no extra cost. The cost involved is the work and effort done by users to make these things possible and we are very thankful that users are kind enough to offer these works to other BibleWorks users!

I have divided the work by volume and chapter. The title of each chapter follows immediately after the volume/ chapter numbers and precedes the body of each chapter. Ginzberg's endnotes, which are found in volumes 5-6, are extremely helpful. As a result, I did not remove the endnote numbers provided by Philologos.

New User-Created Modules & Texts

If you frequent the BibleWorks forum, then you know that some BibleWorks users have been busy making some useful modules and texts.

Pasquale Amicarelli, of Italy, has put together a module that contains images of Codex Alexandrinus. These images are indexed so that if you are looking at any New Testament text in BibleWorks you can click a link in your Resource Summary Window and be taken immediately to the correct page. Pasquale is working on similar modules for Vaticanus and Sinaiticus! You can download the Alexandrinus file HERE (80MB!).

Meanwhile Dan Dyke of dabar.org has been putting together a fantastic collection of ancient texts in translation that can compiled into BibleWorks databases. Take a look at his site!

Ewan MacCleod, with the permission of Raphael Lataster at aramaicpeshitta.com has compiled a module containing the book Was the New Testament Really Written in Greek? Regardless of your views on the topic, this module provides an example of another use for CHM Modules integrated into BibleWorks.

I know that everyone has their "favorite" Bible software. BibleWorks is my favorite because Mike Bushell, Michael Tan and the rest of the BibleWorks crew have configured the program so users can "soup it up" with custom modules, databases and even custom links to the web.
